In 2013, Gonzalez launched a small food truck operation called Tacos El Jefe out of the back of his 1989 Toyota pickup truck. After surrendering his truck to Zutroy Zagreb in lieu of payment for vendor booth fees (Zagreb maintains to his day that he still lost on the deal), Gonzalez partnered with Bird to use his van for the food truck business. Bird insisted on renaming the business to Taco Jabronis, and that they should attempt to cater to a wider audience by attending events not solely for a Spanish-speaking market in the near-west suburbs.

Vanstock was a three-day van show and heavy metal festival held from July 17 to 19, 2015 at Nowell Park in Joliet, Illinois. According to the crude showbill printed for the event, it was supposed to feature bands such as:

* Foreigner
* Bang Tango
* Accept
* Warrant
* Ratchell
* Autograph
* LA Guns
* Krokus (misspelled on the bill as "Crokus")
* Lion
* Rough Cutt
* Slaughter

The showbill was circulated throughout local internet groups and distributed via print media, and generated a moderate amount of interest. However, the "van show" portion of the event consisted of a handful of van-dwelling transients showing up under the pretense of free parking, and for the music festival portion only one band showed up, Rough Cutt, who ended up playing one set on each day of the festival.

Festival organizer Carl Bird disappeared when it was revealed that Vanstock had no permit or insurance, and it was later discovered that the entire event was orchestrated by Bird as a way to draw a substantial crowd for his fledgling food truck business Taco Jabronis. As a result of eating poorly stored and handled food sold by Taco Jabronis, a number of people fell ill from food poisoning, which was exacerbated by the fact that the only sanitation facilities for the entire gathering consisted of the two portable chemical toilets that were normally installed at the park.

Carl Bird was eventually arrested for unlicensed selling of liquor and criminal mischief, to both of which he pleaded guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence of 60 hours of community service, which he did not complete. Vanstock was a three-day van show and heavy metal festival held over July 17–19, 2015 at Nowell Park in Joliet, Illinois. According to the crude showbill printed for the event, it was supposed to feature bands such as:

* Foreigner
* Bang Tango
* Accept
* Warrant
* Ratchell
* Autograph
* LA Guns
* Krokus (misspelled on the bill as "Crokus")
* Lion
* Rough Cutt
* Slaughter

The showbill was circulated throughout local internet groups and distributed via print media, and generated a moderate amount of interest. However, the "van show" portion of the event consisted of a handful of van dwelling transients showing up under the pretense of free parking, and the music festival portion of the show resulted in only one band showing up, Rough Cutt, who ended up playing one set for each day of the festival.

Carl Bird was eventually arrested for unlicensed selling of liquor and criminal mischief, to both of which he plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence of 60 hours of community service, which he did not complete. The matter of Rough Cutt's contracted but unpaid $4,000 compensation remains unresolved as of CURRENTMONTHNAME CURRENTYEAR.
Carl Bird was arrested on March 3, 2010 for causing thousands of dollars in damage to the inside of Partyland, a party equipment rental business located in Rockford, Illinois.

Incident
At approximately 11:03 AM, Bird walked through the door and asked to speak to a "Jimmy the Wop", and claimed "he knows why I'm here, he's got some stuff for me". An employee informed Bird that no person by that name worked there. Bird then requested some "nitro balloons" so he could at least "huff something" in his van, and the staff again responded that they had no idea what he was talking about.

Bird then became irate and proceeded to urinate on a display of inflatable clown punching bags, and then picked up a length of pipe and started smashing merchandise. Store manager Randy Preston telephoned police and then managed to subdue Bird. The police arrived shortly thereafter and cited Bird for public urination and destruction of property.

Aftermath
Bird was held on $300 bond, which was posted by his attorney. He plead "not guilty" to the charges, and the prosecuting attorney for Winnebago County decided not to pursue the case further.
Carl Bird was arrested during a reverse-sting solicitation operation in the Elgin area on June 10, 2025.

Incident
An undercover officer approached a rusted 1978 Dodge Tradesman van parked on the side of Route 25 southbound in the early evening. The officer described the driver as shirtless, wearing cutoff shorts and a gold chain that said 'TWEETY', and covered in crude tattoos. She propositioned Carl to perform a sex act for $40, to which Carl replied, "Hop in, baby!" Carl was taken into custody shortly thereafter. Inside the van, officers found a six-pack of Old Style, several car stereos from 1980s vehicles, a sack of expired Slim Jims, and a duffel bag containing what one deputy called "a suspicious" number of VHS tapes.

Aftermath
Bird was held at the Kane County Jail, with bond reportedly set at $500, which was immediately posted by his attorney, Tony "No Nose" Catellini. When later questioned about the incident, Carl responded:

<blockquote>
I thought she was just real friendly, I wasn't planning on paying her. And... That wasn't even my van!
</blockquote>

Arresting officer Sgt. Lisa Mercado later told reporters:

The whole thing was so bizarre. This bird man pulls up in a rusty van with a wizard airbrushed on the side, it was like something out of an Adult Swim late night show.

Chorbo is a heavy metal band from England. Their music is heavily imbued with sword-and-sorcery themes: muscle-bound warrior heroes, medieval weaponry, perseverance in battle and the ongoing war against dark forces.

Early years and genesis
Chorbo traces its origins to Chibwich, a Liverpool bar band active during the early 1970s. The group was fronted by vocalist Graham Hatman and lead guitarist Don Frumpton; the identities of its remaining members have reportedly been lost to time and brain damage.

Hatman and Frumpton left Chibwich following a period of creative disagreement. Shortly thereafter, a night of heavy drinking brought the pair to Newcastle upon Tyne, where they passed out on the front steps of a motel occupied by Gerald “Luciano” Hartwig, formerly the bassist for the Krautrock band KATHARGO. Upon leaving the motel, Hartwig tripped over the unconscious musicians and revived them with a garden hose. The three subsequently began discussing music and found that their respective styles were naturally compatible. Plans were soon made to revive Chibwich with Hartwig as its bassist.

By this time, however, Chibwich’s remaining members had recruited replacements for Hatman and Frumpton and continued performing under the original name. The resulting dispute over ownership of the name was eventually settled through a violent confrontation involving broken bottles, cricket bats, the destruction of a drum kit, and the burning of a gardening shed. The precise sequence of events—and whether the settlement possessed any legal validity—remains unclear.

Having parted ways with KATHARGO in 1973, Hartwig was readily available to join the new group. He proposed combining the names of the musicians’ former bands: Chibwich and KATHARGO. The resulting contraction, Chorbo, was adopted as the band’s name, marking the beginning of its subsequent career.

The “Scouser Sound” era and stylistic shift
Chorbo’s early material centered on the “Scouser Sound,” a hybrid of hard rock and emerging dance-music styles that would later coalesce into disco, and whose visual stylings included sweat bands, track suits, and excessive gold jewelry. The band was reportedly “only playing this style because that’s what sold at the time”, but all of the members knew the Scouser Sound was over when they included a disco whistle on the song Throb Machine.

Late singer Graham Hatman picked up a worn mass market paperback anthology of Conan the Barbarian stories in 1978 and had a new vision. The band quickly retooled their image and changed direction to a New Wave of British Heavy Metal sound with sword-and-sorcery themed lyrics and visual stylings.

Golden era
In April of 1978, Graham Hatman got kicked out of his flat for non payment of rent. He crashed at Mick Frumpton's house (brother of guitarist Don Frumpton) and wrote what would become the lyrics for Night on Skull Mountain over an intense weekend of drinking. Needing a new living situation, he decided to abscond to his mother's English country cottage. The band followed, and within a span of a week they had fully arranged the songs that would become Night on Skull Mountain. The band was able to negotiate discounted studio time at Flatley Hall in West Bromwich and recorded the album soon after.

Unsuccessful follow-ups
While Chorbo's Conquest tour of the US and UK to support Night on Skull Mountain was a measured success, fans demanded more. However, due to pressures of touring, Graham Hatman's worsening alcoholism, and creative tensions within the band, it took until 1980 to record and release their follow-up album Keep the Wolves at Bay.

Keep the Wolves at Bay
Rod Aylesworth, the band's keyboardist, wrote a significant portion of this album. As a student of Scandinavian studies, he insisted on more Norse-inspired theming for the songs and concept art—this can be seen on the album cover as a lone rider (a warrior actually named "Chorbo" in the canon established roughly by liner notes) standing against the wolf Fenrir, inaccurately cited in the liner notes as a being in Norse mythology that is destined to consume the world during ragnarök.

Despite the ambition behind the album, it was almost universally panned by critics. While Aylesworth characterized the album as "ahead of its time", heavy metal fans of the day received the album poorly. It ultimately sold less than a hundred thousand copies but today is considered a fan favorite, and even attracted a mildly positive review by David St. Hubbins of Spın̈al Tap in an offhand comment made during a magazine interview.
Work with Rick James
Chorbo once shared a photo studio with Rick James. While Chorbo was in the studio shooting their album cover for the unfinished album Warlock Nights, James had booked an adjacent studio to shoot the album cover for the album “Throwin’ Down”, but shortly after arrival one of James’ entourage had his Jheri-curl catch fire, requiring the studio to be fumigated. Chorbo welcomed James with open arms and James ended up with a barbarian-themed album cover.

Definition of "Chorbo"
"Chorbo" also means "summer romance" in Iberian Spanish. The operator of Chorbo's Facebook page, guitarist Don Frumpton, released a statement:

<blockquote>
One of our fans in Spain told us that Chorbo in Spanish means “summer fling”. Well let me tell you what it means in the UK: no compromises heavy metal that is true to its roots even after 45 years.
Liner note continuity
In the liner notes of Night on Skull Mountain, the following liner notes establish that the album is the story of an actual warrior named Chorbo:

<blockquote>
In the mists of time, in the days of yore, a small kingdom was beset on all sides by goblin hordes. Towns were pillaged, men were set aflame, women and children were stolen and carried to an unspeakable fate.

Until one day, when it seemed like the never-ending night was at its darkest, a lone man came down from the mountains and turned the tide of war: Chorbo. Armed with nothing but his legendary strength and an axe, Chorbo takes on the goblin hordes singlehandedly.
</blockquote>

Later, in the notes for Keep the Wolves at Bay, the following passage continues Chorbo's adventures:

<blockquote>
In the ancient scrolls in the cold northern Viking kingdoms, there is a prophecy that foretells Ragnarök, the Twilight of the Gods. It is said that the giant wolf Fenrir will break free from his magical bonds and devour the world.

The arrival of Ragnarök was heralded by three consecutive winters, and the stars disappeared from the sky. A great earthquake then freed Fenrir and he arrived unto Midgard with great awe and terror by all who saw him, and he said to them: "Behold and fear me, for I am the world-devouring wolf Fenrir!"

But there is one thing Fenrir never counted on: Chorbo. In open defiance of the Norns, armed with his legendary strength and mighty axe, Chorbo will challenge the world-devouring wolf in single combat. Can Chorbo save not only the kingdom, but the entire world?

Trivia

The operator of Chorbo's Facebook page, Don Frumpton, released a statement:

<blockquote>
One of our fans in Spain told us that Chorbo in Spanish means “summer fling”. Well let me tell you what it means in the UK: no compromises heavy metal that is true to its roots even after 45 years.
</blockquote>

Liner note continuity
In the liner notes of Night on Skull Mountain, the following liner notes establish that the album is the story of an actual warrior named Chorbo:

<blockquote>

</blockquote>

Later, in the notes for Keep the Wolves at Bay, the following passage continues Chorbo's adventures:

<blockquote>

Can Chorbo save the world once again?

Carl is a pastiche of various real and fictitious characters I have known and encountered throughout my life:

* My father, who is really the genesis of it all. He was a high school dropout at 17, and shortly thereafter was effectively a vagabond for roughly two years. He also spent his 30s playing in unsuccessful Chicago-area bar bands at night and doing manual labor during the day. Many stories of him were told in hushed tones by people in his home town in Tennessee, but all I could reliably gather was that he got involved in a driving shootout on one occasion, which ended in him driving close to the other car so the passenger could hit the other driver with a glass bottle. He also got in a bar fight and hit a dude with a lead weighted blackjack. Among other things, he is spoken of as an expert gambler and legendary pool hustler, and has steadfastly lived his life like he’s the main character in a Johnny Cash song. He also tried to give me a Hustler magazine T-shirt at age 13 (which my mother shut down) and had me wearing Marlboro gear to elementary school.
* My grandfather on my father’s side, whom I’ve never met because he died of alcoholism in the 1970s and allowed my father to play with loaded guns.
* The various colorful characters who came into and out of our lives as a result of my father's involvement in the Chicago-area music scene. (But hey, at least I got to meet Jim Peterik and Dave Bickler from Survivor!)
* “Big D”, a guy who played guitar with my father for many years. He always drove an amazing conversion van decked out with interior lights and a sweet stereo system.
* A drummer that my father jammed with on occasion. He was such an alcoholic, when he gave his phone number it was the phone number of a bar. Despite seeming effectively homeless, he owned a drum set and is one of the greatest drummers I’ve ever seen, and this includes people like John Bonham and Neil Peart.
* My uncle (on my father's side) who was chronically unemployed and addicted to pain pills for much of his life, and swindled me out of a few bucks as a kid on more than one occasion. His main source of income was collecting scrap and shade tree mechanic work. The only person I’ve ever known with a gunshot wound (which he never talked about) and who successfully stopped his truck from getting towed by pulling a .357 magnum on the tow truck driver.
* The various colorful characters in my father's home town, with names like Avery, Churd, Gooch, and Bumper.
* My uncle (on my mother's side) who served hard time for bank robbery and also stabbed a taxi driver while living in Iran.
* "Big Mike", the guy who sold my dad bootleg VHS pornography, who had a habit of drinking and driving which culminated in him crashing his car through a diner.
* The guy at the flea market with a ponytail who sold twelve year-old me any Bowie knife I wanted.
* My wife's uncle, who was in and out of jail for minor offenses his whole life (he found the shoes they gave him to be very comfortable), loved to race stock cars, and was perpetually looking for the next way he was going to get on disability or unemployment. He also lived in various RVs and at one point was dating his live-in nurse (who was treating him for mobility issues related to morbid obesity).
* My wife’s second cousin Rusty, who had a breathalyzer interlock on his pickup truck and was known to walk ten miles to town for beer.
* Uncle Rico from the movie Napoleon Dynamite, who lives in a van and is always working on a side hustle.
* Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Despite the fever dream-like qualities of this show, Carl is one of the few human characters who is a prototypical "loser": unemployed, balding, wears sweat pants and flip flops, speaks with a New Jersey accent, and has a penchant for late 70s hard rock bands such as Foreigner and Foghat.
* Randy "The Ram" Robinson from the 2008 movie The Wrestler, a man who is thoroughly stuck in the 1980s (to the point where he doesn't seem to understand that technology newer than the NES exists) and can't find stable employment or even anywhere he's welcome outside of wrestling, gets locked out of his trailer for non-payment of rent, and drives a sweet van that looks like it may have been lived it at points.

Why Big Bird?
That is a question with a simple answer: random luck.

I have a friend who around 2008-2012 had a tendency to bring me loads of junk to look through and keep what I wanted. One day, he had a crate of items, one of which was a toy Big Bird from the 1980s that looked like it had been on the floor of some guy's van for the past decade. I commented, "that looks like Big Bird's older, meaner cousin with a prison record!" We made some quick modifications:

* A name change to Carl (directly inspired by Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force)
* Turning one eye inwards to give the appearance of lazy eye
* Sharpie'd on prison tattoos
* A dollar store gold chain
* Surgery to remove the malfunctioning pull string voice box (retconned as an operation to remove his kidney, which he sold to repay gambling debts)

And Carl was born!

Why a New York accent?
If I'm from the Midwest, and most of Carl's action takes place there, why does he have a gruff New York accent? Simple: because it's funnier. Carl is ostensibly from the same place where Sesame Street is filmed, which is near NYC. It's meant to evoke images of a rough-around-the-edges low-brow character with limited education.

And their name arose as one of those "this would make a great band name" moments while I was draining ground beef.

Taco Jabronis is a mobile food service business operated by Juan Gonzalez and at times also by Carl Bird.

Early era
Before Juan Gonzalez became associated with Carl Bird, his taco business was known as “Tacos El Jefe” and catered to a mainly Hispanic, Spanish-speaking market in the Melrose Park area. He performed the work on a seasonal basis, selling Mexican staples such as tacos, tamales and elotes at various western Chicagoland festivals.

Association with Carl Bird
Bird met Gonzalez through Zutroy Zagreb, a promoter who organized a disastrous wrestling event at which both Tacos El Jefe and a band managed by Bird were contracted to provide services. Zagreb had Carl dragged into his office to resolve the matter of a missing portable PA system, and Gonzalez was also present to pay vendor fees that he owed to Zagreb.

Gonzalez was unable to pay the vendor fees so Zagreb took possession of the pickup truck Gonzalez was using to operate his business. In the parking lot afterwards, Carl and Jose engaged in conversation. Carl offered to let him use his van in return for a cut of the profits.

Origin and provenance

* Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force

* Sharpie'd on prison tattoos

Trabajo Bone is a heavy metal/hard rock band that incorporates elements of Norteño music and heavily leans into skull and biker imagery.

Career
Trabajo Bone emerged from the Greater Chicagoland heavy music scene in 1994, developing a distinctive fusion of hard rock, heavy metal, and norteño influences. The band's sound is built around conventional metal instrumentation combined with prominent accordion and Mexican melodic elements, while its stage image leans heavily on biker culture, western clothing, leather, chrome, skulls, and bone imagery.

Although often visually excessive, Trabajo Bone developed a reputation as a genuinely capable live band, particularly on the strength of Ramón "Matador" Villaseñor's lead guitar work and Jesús "Chuy Diablo" Cárdenas's effects-driven accordion playing. The group became a durable regional act, performing at clubs, festivals, biker events, and mixed bills throughout the Midwest.

Over the years, Trabajo Bone has shared stages with other acts in the local hard-rock circuit, including Redline, and has maintained a cult following built around the band's unusual combination of musicianship, working-class imagery, and deliberately over-the-top presentation. Despite lineup changes and periodic instability, the group has remained active for decades.

Origin of Name
Carl Bird, who was a member of the band when it was called "Varios Barrios", found himself in over his head, as all of the other members were serious musicians and Bird has questionable musical skills at best. Ramón "Matador" Villaseñor, lead guitarist, who has reportedly referred to Bird as both a "pendejo" and an "assclown", tried to make Bird learn at least one song all the way through. Bird, who has a very limited understanding of Spanish despite trying to join a Spanish-language band, told Villaseñor:

<blockquote>
You're gonna trabajo me to the bone, comprende?
</blockquote>

Villaseñor later recounted:

<blockquote>
We had only been playing for about 15 minutes at that point, and half of that was getting him in tune. But I realized, 'Trabajo Bone', there is something there. That's got to be the band name. Our current name fucking sucks.
</blockquote>

After hearing the band’s new name, Carl suggested “Bonejob” instead. However, at that point the other members had decided to eject him from the band and promptly declined to use the suggested name.

Rod Aylesworth, the band's keyboardist, wrote a greater portion of this album.

Obviously Chorbo is itself a send-up immediately similar to Spın̈al Tap—complete with ridiculous founding story, a previous name, a major retooling (or two!) of musical style, a "black album" scandal and ridiculous antics by the members. Chorbo tends to focus more closely on a specific style of heavy metal called New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and they arrived a bit later on the scene.

The genesis of Chorbo is similar to the story of many things in the Carl Bird universe: happenstance. In this case, it was a random turn of phrase by a friend of mine. He made a Facebook post several years ago riffing on some random band names and one of them was "Chorbo". It hit me like lightning: "this sounds like the name of a heavy metal band that sings about heroic deeds and muscular barbarians!" Thus, Chorbo was born.

As an aside, looking for examples of this sort of music threw me down a YouTube rabbit hole that I've been deep into for almost a decade now. There is a frankly stupefying amount of heavy metal out there that I would classify as NWOBHM. Some of it is absolutely amazing, some of it is terrible, but the important point that cannot be understated is: there is a lot of it, and it can all be found on YouTube with a little digging. I have made a special category for my own purposes: "NWOBHM that was released between 1982–1985 (inclusive)", as almost all of the examples fall between those years. If you go a bit later than '85 and things start sounding a bit like hair metal, or the production values start shifting to more polish/commercial appeal. And if you go earlier than '82, you can still find some decent examples but they're fewer and further between. Some of these records are terrible, but many are astonishingly good. Most have nevertheless been almost entirely lost to time, surviving through YouTube uploads maintained by a small cult of early-to-mid-1980s heavy-metal enthusiasts—which is itself a particularly small subset of cult music fandom. This overlooked second and third tier of NWOBHM is the territory in which Chorbo most naturally belongs.

Truth be told, this sort of music is probably the nearest and dearest to my heart. The visual design language of a medieval warrior or monster, an "Old English" sort of font to write the band or album name, and the musical styling of loud, tight guitar harmonies, aggressive drumming, Hammond organ, and higher-register vocals is my default. Even though I love a fairly wide variety of music, if I started a heavy metal band, it would be Chorbo.

Rod Aylesworth, the band's keyboardist, wrote a greater portion of this album. As a student of Scandinavian studies, he insisted on more Norse-inspired theming for the songs and concept art—this can be seen on the album cover as a lone rider (a warrior actually named "Chorbo" in the canon established roughly by liner notes) standing against the wolf Fenrir, a being in Norse mythology that is destined to consume the world during ragnarök.

| Sophomore effort with Chorbo's new heavy metal sound. Although highly anticipated by many heavy metal fans, this album sold fewer than a hundred thousand copies in the United States. Of this album, David St. Hubbins of Spın̈al Tap said the following:
<blockquote>
It can definitely sit on the shelf next to bands like Grim Reaper and Tygers of Pan Tang.... but not too closely.
| The final album of Chorbo's "Golden age". Confusingly, there is a UK-only version released with an all-black cover and the name changed to simply Rampage, which was hastily prepared and printed in response to a court order forbidding the band from attempting to capitalize off of Graham Hatman's actual drunken axe rampage inside a discount store in Burton-upon-Trent. The band considers this album an epitaph to Hatman who died in 1982.
Trivia
Work with Rick James
Chorbo once shared a photo studio with Rick James. While Chorbo was in the studio shooting their album cover for the single Warlock Nights, James had booked an adjacent studio to shoot the album cover for the album “Throwin’ Down”, but shortly after arrival one of James’ entourage had his Jheri-curl catch fire, requiring the studio to be fumigated. Chorbo welcomed James with open arms and James ended up with a barbarian-themed album cover.

Definition of "Chorbo"
"Chorbo" also means "summer romance" in Iberian Spanish. The operator of Chorbo's Facebook page, Don Frumpton, released a statement:

<blockquote>
One of our fans in Spain told us that Chorbo in Spanish means “summer fling”. Well let me tell you what it means in the UK: no compromises heavy metal that is true to its roots even after 45 years.
